Week Two! @hercules_middle

It’s been an amazing week, and I can feel it all coming together. Students are getting into their routines, kids know where classes are and they’re getting to know their teachers. I’ve got almost everyone’s name down and I’m overjoyed at all the smiling faces (and the sleepy ones).

A quick round-up of what’s happened this week and a brief note on next week.

This week:

English 8th got their Monster novels and they began their Classcraft quest. Making a prediction about they think will be about is the first step. This week there was also testing for Math and Reading. MAP testing is the district mandated standardized testing and stands for Measure of Academic Progress. 8th grade students in my class also took a look at Test Taking Strategies, we reviewed the syllabus, and we set up our class rules and procedures.

English 6th got their Holes novels and began their Classcraft quest. Making a prediction about they think will be about is the first step. This week there was also testing for Math and Reading. MAP testing is the district mandated standardized testing and stands for Measure of Academic Progress. 6th grade students in my class also took a look at Developing Study Skills, we reviewed the syllabus, and we set up our class rules and procedures.

FIlm and Multimedia Year 1 students have been busy on some of the basic skills necessary for work, as this is a career Pathways elective. They’ve been studying key concepts like Professionalism, Ethics, Self-Management and Communication Skills. They’re eager to jump into the film studio, but we’ve got to get some of these key concepts down first.

Film and Multimedia Year 2 students reviewed Professionalism and Ethics, but now they’re getting into their focus career path. Students were asked to choose either Podcasting/Online Radio, YouTubing, Short Film, or Blogging. No one chose Podcasting/Online Radio this year, unfortunately. At this time, we’re putting together the building blocks. So, blogs and YouTube channels are being designed, and the short film team is brainstorming and writing their rough draft for a script.

Next week is a four day week! Students in English will take their STAR test (hopefully we’ll be able to discontinue this test, and just keep the MAP test). They’ll also jump into their first journal entry and have a little vocab. work to do. Film students will continue with the work skills studies for the First Year, and begin creating for the Second Year.

Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend. Support UTR and your local unions! Here’s a video to brighten your day.
